Creams, injections, laser treatments, or painful surgery: these are all methods used to combat the effects of aging on the facial skin. Skin laxity can make you feel self-conscious, and many times efforts to fix it may not bring the results that you desire. On the other hand, surgical procedures can pose too many risks and require a lot of downtime. That is why we offer the PDO Thread Lift here at Advanced Anti Aging & Weight Loss in Evansville, IN. With this innovative and non-invasive skin-lifting treatment, you can regain the youthful, tight skin that you desire.
The Aging Process
As we age, our bodies produce less collagen over time. Collagen is a protein naturally produced by the body that provides strength and elasticity to the skin, keeping it strong, supple, and voluminous. It also is used for wound healing and helps to support growth factors that keep our skin in good shape. When we lose this collagen, the skin loses strength and volume, which can lead to an 80% reduction in skin thickness by the time we turn 70 years old.
As the skin weakens, it loses its ability to support the tissues beneath it, which allows gravity to pull the skin down and stretch it. This loss of strength incurred by loss of collagen is one of the largest factors in the creation of wrinkles, drooping of the skin, and excess skin. This latter condition is also known as skin laxity and affects almost everyone as they age.
Traditional Skin Lifting Treatments
There are many skin lifting treatments that are used to try to combat the effects of skin laxity. These include creams, injections, and facelift surgery. However, each of these methods has its own disadvantages when compared to the PDO Thread Lift treatment.
Though creams help to reintroduce helpful substances like collagen, hyaluronic acid, and different essential vitamins and minerals back into the skin, they are typically most effective for only milder cases of skin laxity. They can also take a longer time to provide satisfactory results. While injections may provide instant results, they often involve the introduction of synthetic or neurotoxic substances into the body. They may also require more frequent retreatment and risk providing unnatural results.
The most widely known traditional skin lifting procedure is facelift surgery, also known as rhytidectomy. This surgical procedure can involve the removal of excess skin, the tightening of facial tissue, and the smoothing out of wrinkles or folds in the face to lift up the skin and provide a tighter, more youthful look. It is typically only used on the lower half of the face. Because it is a surgical procedure, it requires heavy sedation, care from a caretaker, and a longer recovery time that can reach up to two weeks.
How Does the PDO Thread Lift Work?
How It Differs From Traditional Skin Lifting Treatments
Unlike creams or injections, the thread lift treatment can be used to address more severe cases of skin laxity of the facial skin. However, unlike facelift surgery, this treatment is non-invasive and does not require any cutting or removal of excess skin. Because it is not surgical, it can also address more areas of the upper face and requires much less downtime.
Conditions It Treats
This thread lift treatment is primarily used to target areas of the face and neck that undergo more severe loss of strength and drooping. These areas include the brows, cheeks, jawline, and neck. Because it can target so many areas of the face, it can be used to treat:
- Nasolabial lines
- Sagging brows
- Drooping cheeks
- Marionette lines
- Horizontal and vertical forehead wrinkles
- Sagging jawline
- Folds and wrinkles on the neck and chin
The Skin Lifting Process
The threads used during the treatment are called Polydioxanone threads, or PDO threads. These are special medical grade threads that are thinner than hair and made of a biocompatible protein. This absorbable polymer is durable and flexible, allowing it to be minimally invasive.
The threads have small cones, or graspers, on them. These threads are inserted into the skin by means of a large, thin cannula or needle, and the cones grab hold of the skin from under the surface and then are pulled up. Any extra thread is cut off so that it is not noticeable. This suturing technique allows the skin to be re-suspended into a more lifted and youthful position.
How PDO Threads Work
The PDO threads work to relax tendons and muscles and stimulate the body’s natural reaction to foreign substances. This reaction causes blood to flow to the area and stimulates a process called neocollagenesis, which is the production of new collagen in the skin. It also stimulates other naturally occurring substances like hyaluronic acid and elastin, both of which are key to maintaining firm, tight, youthful skin.
Because of the stimulatory nature of the PDO threads, the body’s facial tissues will be continuously and progressively rejuvenated.
The Treatment Process
You will first have an initial consultation with your specialist to go over pre-operative and post-operative instructions. You will also be determined as a candidate for treatment at this time. If you are determined as a candidate, be sure to follow all pre-operative instructions closely for your personal safety.
Because the PDO Thread Lift is non-invasive, it does not require general anesthesia. Instead, one of our skilled surgeons will numb the affected area(s) using lidocaine or another type of appropriate local anesthesia. The threads will then be inserted into the skin. Typically anywhere from one to 15 threads are needed depending on the area covered and severity of the skin laxity.
The entire process typically only takes anywhere from 30-45 minutes and allows you to return to work within the same day and resume normal activities within 2-3 days. For the best results, follow all post-operative instructions closely.
NovaThreads are made from PDO, which is biocompatible and re-absorbs into the body safely. They remain in place for about four to six months and then slowly dissolve. However, because of the collagen infusion that these threads provide, patients can keep seeing results from the lift for a year or more after treatment.
These threads come in either barbed or smooth sutures. The barbed sutures are excellent at gathering skin and produce more lifting action. They are typically placed near the hairline to pull back the skin and lift the jowls and cheeks gently. Smooth sutures can be straight or curved and are excellent for collagen stimulation, though they provide less of a lift. These are often placed strategically around the face, such as along the brows or at the corner of the mouth, to target well-known problem areas where the effects of aging are more apparent.
What Can a PDO Lift Do?
1. Provide a Non-Invasive Alternative to Lift Aging Skin
Because the thread lift treatment only involves local anesthesia and the insertion of the threads using a specially designed thin needle or cannula, no tissue has to be cut or removed to provide results. Furthermore, because there is no heavy sedation or involved healing process, you don’t have to worry about it causing some of the issues to your skin and your daily life that surgery causes.
2. Restore the Body’s Natural Collagen
Collagen is such an important component of healthy, firm skin and also completes several other important functions in the body. The PDO threads stimulate the body’s natural collagen production process continuously, boosting both the health and appearance of your skin.
3. Keep You Safe
PDO is a biocompatible substance that can be safely reabsorbed into the body with no harmful side effects, so you do not have to worry about introducing a synthetic chemical or substance that may cause your body to reject it or react negatively. Instead, by stimulating your body’s healing process, it keeps your blood flowing and your skin healthy.
5. Give You a Fast Treatment Option
The thread lift treatment typically takes no more than 45 minutes to complete the entire session. This means you don’t have to take the whole day off to have it completed. You can come in, have the treatment finished, and then get on with your day within an hour.
6. Provide Instant, Natural, Long-Lasting Results
Because the sutures provide some mechanical lifting of the face as they are tightened, you will see an immediate lifting and tightening of loose or hanging skin. Furthermore, as the sutures absorb and your body continues to produce collagen to support the tissues, the results will be more noticeable and natural over time. There are no artificial substances injected that will block muscle activity or cause unnatural contours, so you will have a completely natural end result.
Even after the sutures absorb, your body will still continue to produce new collagen at the insertion sites. Because of this, patients can continue to see the instant results of their treatment for one to three years after initial treatment!
7. Provide a Fast Treatment
Because of the non-invasive nature of the treatment, you don’t have to worry about cuts, bruises, or swelling taking days to heal. The threads are inserted only into the areas affected and all excess threading is cut off, which means you are good to go once the treatment is completed. In most cases, patients actually return to work immediately after treatment!
8. Provide an Affordable Treatment
Many other types of treatments require frequent repurchasing of materials and retreatment sessions. This all adds up to more cost. For surgical facelifts, you also have to pay for the anesthesia and consider the time you will be out of work. However, because the results of the PDO thread lift last for up to two years, retreatment is infrequent and cuts down on the overall cost of the treatment. And since it is a non-surgical treatment, you don’t have to pay extra out of pocket to cover anesthesia and hospital stays.
9. Combine With Other Treatments
If you have skin conditions that you would like resolved using other treatments such as fillers or skin resurfacing, the PDO thread lift can be combined with these to provide a full-face makeover. Consult with one of our specialists today to find out other treatments we offer and how you can use them together to provide a drastic improvement in appearance!
