You’ve probably heard of BOTOX®. It’s one of the best known cosmetic injectables for the treatment of wrinkles. It works through the use of botulinum toxins to paralyze muscles temporarily, leading to the firmer appearance of skin. The toxin is made by a microbe that causes the food poisoning botulism. While this may sound rather unpleasant, it’s been proven to be a safe and effective method to achieve more youthful looking skin.
How BOTOX® Works
BOTOX® injections block the chemical signals that make nerves contract, which temporarily relaxes the facial muscles beneath the skin. When these muscles are relaxed, they are unable to contract thereby preventing the formation of wrinkles. Some of the most common areas that are treated include crow’s feet around the eyes, frown lines between the eyebrows and the horizontal forehead furrows that can often be quite deep.
Preparing for the Procedure
At your consultation, our medical team will ask you some questions to be sure you are a good candidate for BOTOX®. For example, you should not have received any botulinum toxin injections any time within the past four months. In addition, if you are on blood thinners, you will need to refrain from taking them for at least a few days prior to receiving BOTOX® injections to be sure there is a lesser chance of bruising or bleeding excessively. You will also be asked to provide information on any medicines you are taking like sleep aids, allergy medications or muscle relaxers.
What to Expect
Prior to the procedure, we may numb the area to be treated. There are various forms of local anesthetic used for this purpose. An injection of a numbing agent, prescription cream or spray of cold air are some of the most popular options. Once the area is numbed, a very thin needle will be used to inject the botulinum toxin into the skin and muscles. Only an incredibly small amount is needed to relax the muscles.
The number of injections required will be different for each person and will depend on various factors such as how deep the wrinkle is and how much area is affected. You can resume your regular activities immediately following the procedure. You will simply want to avoid massaging the area of the injection site to be sure the toxin is not pushed into other areas.
You will likely see results within a few days, and they should last from about three months to a year. The duration will be dependent upon the severity of the issue being treated. Because the results of BOTOX® are temporary, regular maintenance injections will be needed. Our medical team will help create a treatment plan that is right for you.
