Juvederm® is an injectable dermal filler made with hyaluronic acid rather than collagen. It can be used to treat any part of the face, including the forehead, mouth, and nose.
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body. It’s a compound that regulates the nutrient and moisture levels in skin cells and thus helps give skin a supple and smooth look.
As people age, the body produces less and less hyaluronic acid, and the skin consequently dries out and becomes wrinkled.
What is Juvederm® used for?
Juvederm® is used to treat a variety of conditions. It is most commonly used to fill in the skin and thus smooth out wrinkles.
It can also be used to treat mild scars, like those caused by acne. It can also be used for facial contouring and improving the shape and size of the lips.
Juvederm® comes in different formulas of varying strengths, so the treatments can be tailored to suit the patient. It can be used for any skin type or color.
How is it used?
The practitioner simply injects Juvederm® into the desired area, generally into the mid to deep part of the dermis. To reduce discomfort, the practitioner may use a topical anesthetic to numb the treatment area. A typical treatment session can be administered in the doctor’s office.
Patients should prepare for the treatment by stop taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications several days ahead of time. They should not wear make-up to the treatment.
After the treatment, patients should avoid exposure to cold, heat, or the sun for at least two weeks after the injections. They should wear sunscreen, and avoid using skin products that contain alcohol on their face.
While the results of a Juvederm® treatment typically last six to nine months, they can sometimes last as long as a year.
Who is not a good candidate for Juvederm®?
People with a history of severe allergies may not be good candidates for Juvederm®. People who are allergic to lidocaine should not use it.
People who have a history of scarring or skin discoloration problems should talk to the doctor before getting Juvederm®. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should also talk to their doctor before using it.
Are there side effects?
The most common side effects include redness and bruising. The effects are temporary.
